Week Six EOC: Fake News

Many people became confuse after one of President Trump’s speeches in Florida. Which also caused some ridicule, humor, and anger towards the president. While discussing US Security and immigration around the world, Trump made a comment that had not actually happened. “You look at what’s happening in Germany, you look at what’s happening last night in Sweden. Sweden, who would believe this? Sweden. They took in large numbers. They’re having problems like they never thought possible” (Melville-Smith). Referring to large number as the number of refugee they allowed into their country. “Sweden took in more refugees per capita than any other European country in 2016” (Robinson). And this does sound like an excellent point when talking about the safety of our country. The only issue was that no one was quite sure what he was talking about with Sweden. There had been no attack in Sweden. “Trump attempted to clarify his remarks, tweeting Sunday: “My statement as to what's happening in Sweden was in reference to a story that was broadcast on @FoxNews concerning immigrants & Sweden” (Noack). Which in fact did not help his case at all. “In that story, the Fox News host Tucker Carlson interviewed Ami Horowitz, a filmmaker who asserts that migrants in Sweden have been associated with a crime wave” (Chan)
Although neither statement went together. With their welcoming policy on immigrants, Sweden has not seen an increase on crime rates. Especially not one that has to do with immigrants. This point within the speech had no good point to it at all. And it has caused some anger and laughter towards the United States. This is why it is so important to understand the difference between real and fake news. Because this whole thing could have been avoided if the president had take the time to do a little research.
